Reflections on 1 Samuel

August 26th, 2011

Having just read the first chapter of the Biblical book, Samuel, I am reminded of how God is ever present in all things.

To give some backstory for those unfamiliar with the narrative, Samuel was the last of the judges born from a woman who was previously barren up until the point she pleaded to God in anguish to be given the gift of child.

The Bible (NASB version), stated later that night, Hannah’s husband, so prudently phrased, had “relations” with her. Can you imagine the anticipation of Hannah? Was she, whilst in the loving grasps of her husband, silently uttering ‘could this be it?’ ‘Is this the time when I shall conceive and have my miracle?’ Regardless of what she was thinking, God worked a miracle in her and she conceived the child who would come to be named Samuel.

Reader, I am reminded of the ever presence of God in this story because even whilst in the throes of making love God is there. The Bible says whilst Hannah and her husband were intimate, God “remembered her”. The poignancy of this simple phrase speaks volumes which trembles my soul. That we might come to know a God, so mighty, so great, and yet so caring to “remember [us]“  is utterly mind blowing.

And thus, I am reminded that God is present; when I do my dirt or do my goodness and righteousness (which is always insufficient); in short, in every moment of my waking and sleeping life.

Adieu!

Climate Change

September 6th, 2009

The topic of climate changs has been the much debated subject amongst our politicians and governments. Some have thrust all their power and resources into research whilst contrarily, others refuse to accept its existence. Climate change has impacted me in a really big way. The earth no longer feels the same to me. Take for example the earth’s tempearture-constantly fluctuating like Jordan and Peter Andre’s relationship.

“Is Darren a new advocate in the campiagn against climate change?” I hear you cry. Well, basically, I went from a hot country to, what can we call it; an unpredictable one; Britain! I look back upon my time in the Dominican Republic and remember those hot days when I only wore shorts and T-Shirts. One did not even need to cream my face after showering; that’s a big thing for a black person! Now, I’m sitting here dressed like I’m about to play some kind of winter sport. Thick jogging pants, sports socks, two t-shirts and a heavy hoody-I’m only missing skis and a visor!

I have a cold and I’m trying to stay warm; trying to stay warm I repeat! A Domincan would have laughed me out of town if I had said that but not a week ago. The sudden sharp change in climate has played tricks with my system resulting in sore throat and snotty nose-eugh!   Darren is not a happy bunny at the moment.

“Ade, please bring the gloves darling”

I want sunshine, and I want it now!
